Award Categories

The 2010 Arab Health Achievement and Innovation Awards will be divided into nine categories. Criteria that should be shown in the Award submission are listed under each category and should be addressed in the synopsis and supporting material. All submissions should include data to quantify their achievements. All material submitted should relate to achievements from December 2008 to November 2009.

  1. Excellence in Imaging and Diagnostics Award
    This award is presented to the organisation or department that has made the greatest contribution in the field of imaging and diagnostics. Criteria for selection;
     

    • Quality Assurance Program - Achievement through Quality assurance program (implementation, improvement, etc...)
    • Accuracy of Radiological Diagnosis – Accuracy in each imaging modality (true positive, true negative, false positive, false negative)
    • Turn around Time - by type of examination (time from the imaging request is issued till report result)
    • Patient safety in the Department - including identification of patients, patient falls, communication with the patients)
    • Workflow and Safe Design – workflow of patients, staff, support function, etc. and how design promote safety inside the department
    • Radiation Safety Policy - Implementation of policy
    • Waste Management Policy - Implementation and improvement of policy

         
     
     
     
  2. Excellence in Surgery Services Award
    This award is presented to the organisation or department that has made the greatest contribution in the field of surgery.

    The following criteria must be addresses to measure the extent the organization abides by the International Clinical Pathways/ guidelines. Criteria for selection;
      • Post infection rates
    • Unplanned rate of return to the OR
    • Average length of stay
    • Success rates
         
     
     
     
  3. Roche Excellence in Laboratory Award
    This award is presented to the organisation or department that has made the greatest contribution in the field of medical laboratory. Criteria for selection:
      • Evidence of true positive results
    • Safety within the laboratory
    • Waste management policy and blood management policy
    • Patient identification
    • Innovation
    • Continuous improvement – for example Lean and Six Sigma
         
     
     
     
  4. Excellence in Patient Centred Care Award
    This award is presented to the hospital or institution that has developed the most effective patient centred care approach in the region. Criteria for selection:
      • What initiatives have you implemented to make your hospital/ institution more patient orientated/ friendly?
    • What initiatives have you implemented to educate the patient?
    • Evidence of increasing patient satisfaction
    • Patient Privacy
    • Patient Rights
         
     
     
     
  5. Excellence in Hospital Emergency Department Award
    This award is presented to the Emergency department that has made an exceptional impact to Emergency Medical Services.  Criteria for selection:
      • Accessibility
    • Continuity – How are services integrated? i.e. Before, during and after
    • Do you have a system for medication reconciliation?
    • Improved responsiveness in emergency situations
    • Disaster Plan / Emergency preparedness - What is in place?
         
     
     
     
  6. Human Resource Development Award
    This award is presented to the hospital that has been identified as the employer of choice to support the region’s top talent.  Criteria for selection:
      • Retention Policies
    • Rate of turn over
    • Occupational Health and Safety Policies
    • Institutionalised Education and Training
      • Availability of educational facilities
    • Achievement of CME hours
    • Competency
      • Staff review and appraisal process
    • Evaluation and verification of skills
    • Orientation Program
    • Broad-based personal and professional career/development opportunities
         
     
     
     
  7. Excellence in Electronic Health Records Award
    This award is presented to the hospital or institution that has made the greatest advancement in development of electronic health records for their facility.  Criteria for selection:
      • Contributes to reductions in errors
    • Contributes to improved Quality and Safety
    • Increased efficiency and functionality of hospital management
    • Enhanced speed of response from various business units
    • Enhanced transparency of financial management and reporting
    • Interoperability of information systems
    • User friendly technology
    • Confidentiality
    • Security
         
     
     
     
  8. Excellence in Patient Safety Award

    This award is presented to the hospital or institution that has made the greatest contribution to the development of patient safety.

    This award will demonstrate your action plans and approach in improving patient safety. For example such problems as patient identification, mislabeling, incorrect diagnosis. Criteria for selection;
      • Identify patients correctly
    • Improve effective communication
    • Improve the safety of high-alert medications
    • Ensure correct-site, correct-procedure, correct-patient surgery
    • Reduce the risks of health care-associated infections
    • Reduce the risk of patient harm resulting from falls
         
     
  9. Outstanding Contribution of an Individual to the Middle East Healthcare Industry Award

    This award will recognise an outstanding healthcare professional that has made a significant contribution to the healthcare industry in the Middle East. These contributions, whether they have been in research, leadership, innovation or mentorship, must have had a lasting impact in the region and must have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to develop the industry.

    Individuals may be nominated by a company or a peer who must detail why they feel the nominee deserves to be recognized for their achievements.
