Advancing Care—Locally and Globally

Monica Kogan, MD, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Rush University Medical Center, uses a revolutionary new magnetic technology to give young people with significant leg length discrepancies symmetrical limbs and a normal life, with the least possible suffering.

First, Kogan implants a magnet-powered lengthening device in a patient’s bone in the shorter leg. Then, at home, the patient uses a magnetic-field generator to prompt the rod to slowly extend for a few minutes a day until the leg reaches the proper length. Weekly X-rays in the office help Kogan monitor her patient’s progress. This new system eliminates the need for an external brace, hurts less and is less prone to infections than older methods.

“It’s much more user-friendly and convenient,” Kogan says.

THE BEST NEW TREATMENTS
Rush, an academic medical center in the heart of Chicago, Illinois, has a long, proud history of cutting-edge research. In the past year alone, its medical investigators have been leaders in game-changing discoveries for Parkinson’s disease, kidney disease, joint replacement technology, and recovery from spinal cord injury.

Rush University Medical Center is especially proud of how its physicians and scientists collaborate for the patients’ benefit. They routinely bring discoveries from their research labs into the clinic and, as with Kogan's pioneering use of limb-lengthening technology, bring the best new treatments from around the world to patients as quickly as possible. At Rush, it is always the patients who come first.

OUR STUNNING TOWER
The heart of the Rush campus is its 800,000-square foot Tower, a healthcare destination that houses, for example, one of only three advanced surgical and intervention platforms in the U.S., where specialists work together in the moment to achieve the best solutions for patients. A soaring five-story curvilinear bed tower perches atop the base like a resting butterfly. This safe and comfortable haven for inpatient stays offers impressive views and plenty of natural light, and it strategically places nurses and other healthcare personnel just steps away from both their patients and vital resources. There is also a dedicated pediatric facility, Rush University Children's Hospital.

HIGH MARKS FOR QUALITY AND SAFETY
If you choose Rush, you can be confident you'll receive some of the finest healthcare in the world. U.S. News & World Report magazine ranks Rush among the best in the country in nine specialties, including its orthopedics program (No. 4), and its neurology and neurosurgery program (No. 13).

It is the only medical center in Illinois to receive Vizient’s Quality Leadership Award, ranking No. 5 among 102 U.S. academic medical centers in 2016. Rush has been among the top five centers eight times since Vizient (formerly University HealthSystem Consortium) began evaluating hospital quality and safety in 2005 — a testament to Rush’s unwavering commitment to excellent patient care.
